Freshers Week 101

Freshers Week 101

It’s almost that time of the year, and we want you to be fully prepped with everything you need to know about Freshers Week. It is not only enjoyable for first years and other incoming students, in fact, second-, third- and fourth-year students also enjoy this week.

If this is your first year of university then you have so much to look forward to! This week is designed to take the edge off moving away from home and going to university. It helps students make friends and have fun.

If you don’t know much about this week, then don’t worry. Here’s a full guide with all the information you need to get by.

  1. What is it?

Freshers week, or sometimes called Welcome Week, refers to the week before semester one. Depending on your university, it will likely be somewhere around 19 to 25 September.

The week is allotted to help students relax, unpack and get to know their new surroundings. During the week, the university and its societies will organise countless activities. Non-university organisations, such as your local pub or restaurant, may also organise special events or discounts for students.

There are suitable activities for all types of students, and whether you like to party or not, there is something for everyone.

Most universities will offer you a special deal called “a wristband”. This wristband will give you entry to all the university events and it’s useful to get if you plan on attending them. It usually will not cover society or private events. It’s worth noting though that society events are usually free whereas private events may have an entry fee.

You will also be able to get amazing freebies. For example, during my five years at university I always ate for free during Freshers. Domino’s Pizza gives out free unlimited pizza and many societies will host free meals to try and attract new members. Other chain restaurants and cafes will also usually give out free food on campus and you’re usually welcome to go back as many times as you like.

Additionally, you can benefit from the presence corporations and big businesses, such as PwC and EY, have during Freshers. Many organisations will have recruiters available to talk to new and existing students. It’s a great time to get more information on potential internships and career opportunities.

  1. Freshers during COVID-19

As regulations stand Freshers will go ahead. Nonetheless, it is up to each individual university to decide if its official events will be in-person or virtual. For example, the University of Edinburgh is having a mix of in-person and online events to ensure that its students from all over the world, and those concerned about the risk of transmission, can partake. Remember to always follow official guidance on safety precautions.

  1. Important events

Here’s some of the week’s most popping events:

Activities Fair: During the activities you’ll get to see all the different societies your university has to offer. Now is your opportunity to do something out your comfort zone! Join that society you are curious about, learn that new skill or go to that taster session.

Sports Fair: In some universities this is part of the activities fair, and in some it is a separate event. Basically, it is dedicated to all the different sports you can get involved in at university.

Fresher’s Ball: This will usually be the last day of freshers. It’s a ball where you dress up in nice clothing and dance the night away.

We hope you’ll enjoy this special week. You’ll get to meet new friends, explore the city and have fun! As always, if you have any questions or would like to discuss your study options, you are welcome to book a free initial consultation.
