Why Enrol in a Foundation Programme?

When international students research studying in the UK, the term “foundation programme” often comes up.  These two words may seem unfamiliar and vague to many students and can leave them with even more questions than they started off with. This blog article will give you everything you need to know about foundation programmes, and help you decide whether it’s something for you.

What is a foundation programme?

Foundation programmes are often referred to as pathways to undergraduate study and they are an amazing way to prepare yourself for university. It gives international students who don’t qualify for immediate entry a second chance at studying at a British university.

They can be offered by a university or by a private educational institution with links to universities. Some pathways will provide you with direct entry to a university if you achieve the required grades, while with others you will need to apply to the universities separately.

Generally, a foundation degree will take up to a year to complete and the subject pathway you take will be dependent on what you would like to study.  However, all pathways will usually provide significant English language support so that international students will improve their language skills.

What foundation courses can I study?

As previously mentioned, the courses you will study should be relevant to what you would like to study at university. For example, if you would like to study finance at university, you should study finance related subjects during your pathway, such as economics and maths. Furthermore, you will also study some English language classes, such as writing skills or IELTS preparation classes.

Other pathway subjects include Art, Design & Architecture; Business & Finance; Engineering & Computing; Law, Humanities & Social Sciences; Science & Pharmacy and lastly Medicine. There is a suitable foundation programme available for practically every degree in the UK.
