A Level Results Day 2021

A Level Results Day 2021

Tuesday 10 August 2021 is the day where all A level students across the world will receive their results. These results will determine to which university and course a student is accepted.

Because of COVID-19, grades were determined by coursework, class performance and teachers’ predicted grades instead of the traditional exams. Some students ended up needing to take more tests than in previous years, but despite the freedom given to schools, measures were put in place to ensure consistent marking across the country. For instance, one of the measures was requiring schools to submit samples of student work.

What if I don’t get the grades I need for university?

Naturally, all students hope that their hard work paid off and that they achieved good marks. Sadly, this is not always the case and sometimes students don’t get the grades they need for university.

However, try not to panic because there are solutions to your dilemma. Firstly, you should try to contact the university’s admissions office, as they may change the requirements if you narrowly missed your offer or they may offer you a place on a different course.

Secondly, you can try to apply for university through clearing, which matches students with spare university places. There are always thousands of clearing places available in a multitude of universities across the country. To learn more about clearing check out this article.

Thirdly, traditional A level exams will be held in October in England. All students who were supposed to take an A level exam this year are eligible to enroll. Then, you can use your grades from these exams to apply to university.

Lastly, your school or college’s careers adviser is always there to discuss options such as a gap year, work or an apprenticeship.

Can I appeal against my results?

Yes, you can appeal against your results if you believe that they don’t accurately reflect your work.

The first step you should take is asking your school or college to check whether it has made a mistake. If that was the case, your school will send the new grade to the exam board who then decides whether to update the grade or not.

If the school maintains that the result is correct, but you believe differently, you have the right to ask for an appeal. Your school must submit the appeal on your behalf. The deadline for priority appeals is 23 August and the final deadline for all appeals is 17 September. It is important to note that any new grade you receive could be higher or lower than the one given on results day. If the new grade is lower, the exam board and UCAS will use this grade instead of the previous one.
