COVID-19: What Restrictions Are Being Lifted on 19 July?

Long-awaited changes to COVID-19 regulations have been introduced in England and Scotland on Monday, 19 July. Wales already lifted some restrictions on 17 July, and Northern Ireland will do the same on the 26th. After a year-and-a-half of living with some type of limitations, these changes are welcomed by many, however Prime Minister Boris Johnson urges the public to practice caution and responsible behaviour.

These changes are a result of the successful vaccination campaign with 87.9% of the population having received the first dose and 68.3% being fully vaccinated. Now with the partial return to a pre-COVID life studying abroad in the United Kingdom has become easier and better for international students. So, what’s changed?

England

Social Distancing

  • There is no limit on the amount of people allowed to meet
  • Face coverings are no longer required by law, however in busy places you are still recommended to wear one
  • The one metre plus distancing rule is removed

Events and Gatherings

  • Nightclubs, bars and restaurants may operate at full capacity
  • There are no limits to the number of people attending any type of event or party

Travel

  • Travel to amber list countries is allowed
  • Under-18s and fully vaccinated adults will not need to quarantine upon arrival from amber-list countries

Scotland

Scotland remains more cautious than England and is upholding the face covering requirement. Furthermore, nightclubs will stay closed and only ten people from four different households will be allowed to meet in an indoor setting. Nonetheless, Scotland hopes to lift most of these restrictions on 9 August.
