Studying at the University of Cambridge – What’s It Like?
Summer is here and if you are considering undergraduate programmes at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge (commonly referred to as Oxbridge) be aware of the earlier deadline of 15 October 2021 for 2022 entry. To give you an idea of what it is like studying at a world-class university, we interviewed the founder of TopCourses, Ms. Maozi Chen, to share her experience of studying at Cambridge’s Judge Business School.
Q: Can you tell us more about your background?
Maozi: In 2002, I came to the UK as an international student. After A-levels, I studied a BSc and a MSc in Biochemistry at the University of Bristol with scholarships. I founded TopCourses in 2018 after working in the international education industry since 2010.
Q: Why did you choose to study at the Judge Business School?
Maozi: As my business grew, I felt the need to study entrepreneurship in a more systematic way and to discover where my blind spots were. Judge Business School is a world-renowned centre for business innovation and entrepreneurship. It offers regular network and guest speaker events where I meet many like-minded entrepreneurial students who I continuously learn from. In addition, studying part-time has allowed me to keep running TopCourses.
Q: What is studying at Cambridge like during COVID-19?
Maozi: Cambridge has adopted the hybrid learning method with students being able to choose to live on campus or study online from home. Judge Business School has an excellent online learning portal and all course materials, including pre-recorded videos, are uploaded. The portal also allows interaction between lecturers and other fellow students. The course is academically demanding and stimulating, as expected from one of the world’s best business schools. Judge Business School encourages independent learning and focuses on training students to ask “good” questions. I have certainly learned a lot from the programme and am able to apply what I have learnt to my business.
Q: What type of students are Cambridge looking for?
Maozi: They are looking for someone with an excellent academic track record and the potential to make a difference and become a leader in his or her field. The University of Cambridge encourages independent learning, so discipline, self-motivation and the ability to think independently are also important.
Q: What advice would you give to students applying to British universities?
Maozi: I would advise students to sit down and think about their career goals. With that in mind, they should look for a course which they are interested in studying and that will benefit their future career. Students can learn more about different universities and courses by joining online course introduction events, watching YouTube videos and talking to current students. Once they have identified their course of choice, they should work hard to prepare an outstanding application. Take the time to carefully write answers that reflect your strength, passion and personality. Lastly, prepare well for the interview and be confident during the interview. You can do this!
Submitting an excellent application and doing well in interviews really improves your chances of getting admitted to a top university. That’s why TopCourses is here to help international students get into their dream university and embark on an amazing study journey in the UK!
