The Complete University Guide 2022
The Complete University Guide 2022
There are over 130 universities in the UK. Learning about all of them is almost a mission impossible. Luckily, students, parents and other stakeholders have access to a number of ranking tables to help them find a way through the maze of endless degree options. One of them is the Complete University Guide which has just released its latest table.
What is the Complete University Guide?
The Complete University Guide is one of the leading university ranking tables in the UK. It has been published annually for over 10 years by an independent editorial team. The Guide includes an overall ranking table, as well as ranking tables for individual subjects.
What criteria does it use
The Complete University Guide ranks universities based on ten criteria. The scores for each criteria are weighted and then added up to arrive at an overall score for each university. These ten criteria are:
“Academic services spend” – the expenditure per student on all academic services
“Degree completion” – a measure of the completion rate of undergraduates studying at the university
“Entry Standards” – the average UCAS tariff score of new undergraduate students under the age of 21
“Facilities spend” – the expenditure per student on staff and student facilities
“Good honours” – the proportion of firsts and upper seconds
“Graduate prospects” – a measure of the employability of graduates
“Research quality” – a measure of the average quality of research
“Research intensity” – a measure of the fraction of staff who are research-active
“Student satisfaction” – a measure of the view of students on the teaching quality
“Student-staff ratio” – a measure of the average staffing level.
The Top 10 UK Universities in the Complete University Guide 2022
The Complete University Guide 2022 has just been released in early June 2021 and can be accessed here.
Oxford and Cambridge continue to be at the top of the league with Oxford beating Cambridge by one percentage point, thus reversing last year’s order. Over the last year, there have been minor adjustments in the top ten with Lancaster University dropping to eleventh place and Warwick University becoming tenth.
How reliable are ranking tables?
While ranking tables are compiled by independent editors and are generally credible, they use different criteria to assess the universities and therefore students should refrain from making a choice of which university to apply to solely based on its ranking. Furthermore, different universities have varying areas of expertise so you should also look at the subject table for your preferred course.
The ranking table provides a good starting point for your research on British universities.
